So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice Cream Review

Finally, an ice cream without Maltitol! I was excited when Whole Foods brought So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice Cream in. You see, I'm a big coconut fan and I also love ice cream. Normally, I make my own small ice cream treat with heavy cream, erythritol and a few frozen raspberries but it melts so quickly and doesn't have the true consistency of dipping your spoon in and pulling out that frozen goodness that just melts in your mouth.

While Maltitol is touted as a low carb sweetener, it is said that 50% of those carbohydrates are in fact metabolized as glucose. What a mislead that was for the first few years of my low carb lifestyle. I ate many low carb treats with this tummy grumbling sweetener and endured some distress in other ways as well. Now that would have all been worth it had I not metabolized 50% of that garbage!

Now the So Delicious Coconut Ice Cream has a couple of slightly undesirable ingredients such as carrageenan and cocoa processed as alkali, (remember, I'm a bit of a purist) but since I'm so diligent about healthy food and never eat sugar, wheat, legumes, polyunsaturated oils, etc., a couple of ingredients once every few weeks shouldn't bother me. It's often said that if we feed the body a little something undesirable it actually builds antibodies so there ya go! I like the fact that chicory root is added because not only is it a natural "fiber sweetener" it's also beneficial as a pre-biotic which feed the bacteria in the gut. The prebiotic sits in the large intestine while the probiotic sits in the small intestine. You see, when I'm eating my ice cream, I tell myself I am encouraging healthy gut bacteria. Ah, justification....as long as it's for something healthy, I guess it's acceptable!

With 72 grams of carbohydrate in the entire container, we can subtract 40 of those carbs due to fiber. That's only 32 grams for the entire container. It states that there are 4 servings.....well, let's just leave it at that and you can use your imagination. Remember on my website, I'm a self proclaimed food addict and this ice cream only comes home once a month.

Enjoy! I hope you have more control than I do.

  5. Erythritol is just a different sugar alcohol, like Maltitol, and I had miserable diarrhea next day proving it. Unable to find no-sugar-added anywhere, even Whole Foods (who charge more for it), just the NSA bars.

  6. You're correct. Erythritol is just another SA. However, some find they have little to no reaction to erythritol as compared to maltitol or xylitol. I am one of them.

My husband on the other hand is affected negatively by all SA's.

Many can utilize small amounts and build tolerance.

This is definitely a your mileage may vary type of situation.

I personally make a dessert that works well for my journey and that's just 1 egg yolk, 1/2 cup of frozen berries and 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream all put in the blender or a bullet. I've now reached a point where I don't need any sugar at all with this treat but for others, a bit of honey or SA might be helpful.

    Thank you for your contribution!

    1. Update! I will no longer be eating this ice cream. Since I have posted this, I have learned through credible sources:

Per Dr. Ray Peat, PhD, It has been found to cause colitis(inflammation of the large intestine/colon) and anaphylaxis (life threatening allergic reaction) in humans.

Dr. Andrew Weil says, “Carrageenan can cause ulcerations and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract.”

Dr. Russell Blaylock in his book “Health and Nutrition Secrets that can save your life” Pg. 196 writes "Carrageenan is a complex polysaccaride made from seaweed and is used as a binding agent. Experimentally carrageenan is used as an agent to induce, intense inflammation in experimental animals. A recent study found that when carrageenan was injected in animals along with a cancer causing chemical, tumors appeared more rapidly…than in control animals injected with the carcinogen alone. The same was seen when human breast cancers were implanted in animals along with carrageenan. The combination made the tumors grow faster and spread more rapidly than in control animals. As a result carrageenan is classified as a tumor promoter.” Dr Blaylock named carrageenan as an additive that may contain MSG.

Dr. Joann Tobacman, M.D., University of Iowa Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine did a number of studies on carrageenan. She said, “Evidence from animal models has demonstrated that degraded carrageenan causes ulcerations and malignancies in the gastro intestinal tract.” After conducting epidemiological and laboratory research on carrageenan, Dr. Tobacman published an extensive review of 45 investigations on harmful gastrointestinal effects of carrageenan in animal experiments. The article was published in an issue of Environmental Health Perspectives, the journal of the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences. In the studies she found that carrageenan is taken up by the intestinal cells rather easily, but the cells are unable to metabolize it. As carrageenan accumulates in cells, it may cause them to break down, and over time this process could lead to ulceration.

In the past I came across information that carrageenan was an emulsifier and it caused the pores in the intestinal tract to become larger; permitting larger molecules of undigested food to enter the bloodstream.

This would cause a burden on the lymphatic system, whose main function is to clear out “foreign invaders” from the bloodstream.

Dr. Mercola writes: “A number of studies have found that the widely used food additive carrageenan causes cancer in food animals and its use in human foods should be reconsidered…enough evidence exists about the cancer-causing effects of carrageenan to limit the use of this food additive.

You see, I have stomach issues and while working on my gut, I just can't allow anything questionable. Farewell SO Delicious and anything that uses carrageenan!
